眷村老樹一棵棵倒下，能做的只剩道別！東港共和眷村內有上百棵老樹，隨著榮民接連離去，都市計畫又讓許多軍眷選擇搬離，社區內的老樹就這樣任人宰割，故鄉在地眷二代眼裏不斷改變，只能靠照片懷念年少時光。東港共和新村為早期軍用宿舍，大面積綠地和緩慢生活步調，是當地90歲以上人口最密集的區域，也有了「長壽村」的美稱，但近年的都市變更、道路拓寬等規畫，讓榮民、老樹不斷流失，長壽村一名也漸漸被世人遺忘。

50歲的眷二代王立皓指出，記得年少時村內近7成的面積，遍地樹木生意盎然，但隨著5年前的都市計畫，老樹被移栽、認養等屢見不鮮，誇張的是盜「木」賊的出現，長年下來綠地面積剩不到當時的一半。「老榕樹的死，凝聚了眷二代守護故鄉的力量」王立皓說，去年村內1棵近80歲的老榕樹憑空消失，村民們失去每天報到的歇腳處非常憤怒，大家齊力抽絲剝繭將其尋回，但老榕樹返鄉時根部受創，迄今仍了無生機大家都相當不捨。共和里里長林國勝表示，8日下午村內又有1棵樹齡超過80年的木麻黃，因不敵強風而倒下，大家看著清潔隊將樹幹搬運上車都相當難過。老樹就像家人一樣，每天都生活在一起，天災、人禍不斷造成威脅，大家必定合力防守到最後一刻。(中國時報)，
